STREETWISE: On vacation, to escape the heat of Fort Bragg

By David Rogers. BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — Don’t call Amanda Warren and Joe O’Shaughnessy couch potatoes when they go on vacation.

They stopped to talk with Blowing Rock News on June 28, on Main Street just in front of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. In Blowing Rock for the waterfalls, hiking trails and to escape the heat of their homes near the Fort Bragg military base (also known as Fort Liberty), the duo was fresh off an excursion down and up the Glen Burney Trail.

“We love it,” Warren said of their visit to Blowing Rock. “We went to the waterfalls down the Glen Burney Trail then had lunch over at Six Pence Tavern. Glen Burney is a tough trail if you are going all the way to the bottom, but it was worth it. It is certainly easier going down than coming back up! Six Pence was very nice.”

O’Shaughnessy was wearing a T-shirt that screamed “nurse” across his chest and, as it turned out, both had government jobs in the healthcare industry.

“Streetwise” is a periodic column in Blowing Rock News in which we stop random people on Main Street and learn more about them. They could be local, full-time or seasonal residents, vacationers or visiting business folks. It is a chance for our readers to learn more about who is out and about in downtown Blowing Rock.
