Watauga overpowers Ashe County, 3-0

By David Rogers. WEST JEFFERSON, N.C. — Fierce in the middle and powerful on the outside, Watauga varsity women’s volleyball all but dominated at Ashe County on Aug. 18, winning in straight sets, 3-0.

Ashlyn Smith (14 kills), Julia Rowan (7 kills) and Mia Mitchell (6 kills) led the Pioneers on the outside with middle blocker Addie Stough (7 kills) a force in the center frontline. Defensively at the front, Stough (7 blocks), Rae Coffey (6 blocks) and Mitchell (4 blocks) had a number of putbacks to thwart the Huskies’ attack.

Lainey Gragg add 28 assists to her growing career mark in the Pioneer record books.

In the backcourt, Caroline Childers kept the ball in play after Ashe County attacks with 14 digs, with Smith and Gragg adding 8 and 5 digs, respectively.

Smith, Childers and Ember Honeycutt led the team in serve receives, with 22, 12 and 8, respectively. On offense putting the ball in play, Honeycutt recorded a team high 3 service aces, while Smith and Childers earned 2 aces each.

Next up for the Pioneers is a quadrangle tournament involving three perennially strong adversaries, including host Cox Mill, as well as North Iredell and Providence on Aug. 22.
