Moronta’s grand slam and 6 RBIs power App State to Game 3 win over Georgia State, 13-9

0

By David Rogers. ATLANTA, Ga. — App State jumped in front of Georgia State with a 7-run first inning in Game 3 of the weekend series and never looked back en route to a 13-9 victory. Designated hitter Joseph Moronta played a key role with six RBIs in the Sunday afternoon affair at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Moronta’s red-letter day included a home run in his 3-4 outing, scoring a pair of runs to go with his six RBIs. His dinger was a grand slam in the top half of the 4th inning, accounting for four of the Mountaineers’ five runs in the frame that expanded their lead to 12-5.

After App State’s 7-run outburst to open the game, Georgia State reliever Duncan Lutz was called in from the bullpen to stop the rally. He blanked the Mountaineers in the second and third innings, but trouble started from the get-go in the 4th inning, when Austin St. Laurent singled and Drew Holderbach walked after pushing the count to 3-2. With runners on first and second, Banks Tolley singled to center, bringing in St. Laurent and that was the end for Lutz.

His replacement, righthander Trent Reddick, didn’t fare any better. C J Boyd laced a single to left, loading the bases and setting the stage for Moronta’s grand slam HR.

App State manufactured an insurance run in the 8th inning, a one-out Moronta single scoring Tolley from second base.

Counting a rare “tie” in Game 3 vs. Arkansas State a week ago, the Mountaineers are unbeaten over the last seven games and have jumped up to fifth place in the Sun Belt Conference standings and nine more SBC games to play before the conference tournament.

With the win, App State’s record improves to 26-14-1 overall and 11-9-1 in Sun Belt play. They play at Wake Forest on April 30, with first pitch slated for 6 p.m. at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C.

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — While Friday’s Day 1 of the App State Open track and field meet at the new Randy Marion facility was greeted by blustery, mostly wet weather, Saturday’s Day 2 saw clear, sunny skies with an occasional wind gust.

Twenty-two teams sent athletes to compete in the various men’s and women’s events, as well as several “unattached” athletes in every discipline.

App State WTEN rallies from No. 7 seed into Sun Belt tournament championship final

0

By Ethan Bumgarner. ROME, Ga. – For the first time in school history, App State Tennis has advanced to the conference championship match after defeating Troy 4-1 in Saturday’s Sun Belt Conference tournament semifinals.

The seventh-seeded Mountaineers (15-9) will face No. 1 seed Old Dominion on Sunday.

“This team is incredible,” said Head Coach Hannah Fetters. “They have showed up with incredible energy, discipline and mental toughness which is why we have made it to the finals of the tournament. We aren’t done yet!”

Maggie Pate elevated the Mountaineers to the championship match when she defeated Troy’s Valeriia Avdeeva in three sets, sweeping her opponent 6-0 in the third set to clinch the match against the third-seeded Trojans (15-6).

After falling in the second set, the Floridian went up 5-0 in the third and broke a 15-all tie on court four, scoring three straight points and ending the match with a powerful backhand down the line. Pate accepted her teammates with open arms when they rushed her in pure excitement as they made program history.

Savannah Dada-Mascoll won 6-0, 6-1 against Kristina Kukaras on court one, finishing first among the six singles matches and powering the Mountaineers to a 2-0 lead early into singles play. Olwyn Ryan-Bovey won on court three against Maria Guirguis in multiple tiebreakers, 7-6 [7-5], 7-5, just before Pate closed out the match.

For the second straight day, Dada-Mascoll and Ellie Murphy clinched the doubles point for App State in a tiebreaker at 6-all. The Mountaineers’ duo gave up two points in the tiebreaker with Troy’s top pairing of Guirguis and Avdeeva. Dada-Mascoll secured match-point by placing the ball in the upper quadrant of the court out of reach of both Trojans to give App State its third straight doubles win in the tournament.

Pate and Naledi Manyube finished first in doubles as the tandem swept Hagar Ramadan and Leena Metwally 6-0 for their second win together in the tournament.

UP NEXT
App State will face Old Dominion in its first-ever conference championship match. In their previous matchup last week, the Monarchs defeated the Mountaineers 6-1 on Senior Day in Boone.

Mountaineer rally in 7th to edge Georgia State in Game 2, 6-5

0

By David Rogers. ATLANTA, Ga. — Fueled by a pair of RBI doubles, App State used a 5-run 7th inning to rally past host Georgia State on April 27 at the GSU Baseball Complex, edging the Panthers, 6-5.

GSU scored one run in each of the second and fourth innings, then surged on top with a 3-run 5th inning to take a 5-1 lead going into the second half of the game. What the Mountaineers have proven time and again in the 2024 campaign, however, is that few opponent leads are safe given their high-scoring potential.

In the critical 7th inning, Austin St. Laurent ripped the first pitch thrown to him to a deep infield singled, the GSU shortstop unable to make the play in time. Drew Holderbach immediately followed with a double down the left field line to score St. Laurent all the way from first base. After Banks Tolley walked to put runners on first and second, C J Boyd doubled to the gap in left, scoring Holderbach. Joseph Moronta joined the RBI parade with a single through the right side, scoring Tolley, then Adam Quintero launched a fly ball to deep right field for a sacrifice fly, Boyd tagging up at third and scoring.

Moronta stole second to put himself in scoring position with two outs before Braxton Church walked. Then, Hunter Wilder capitalized with a single to centerfield, with Moronta beating the throw to the plate.

With the win, App State’s record improved to 25-14-1 overall, 10-9-1 in the Sun Belt Conference.

KEY PERFORMERS

  • APP – Austin St. Laurent: 2-4, 1 run scored, walk
  • APP – Adam Quintero: 3-4, 2 RBIs, 2B
  • APP – C J Boyd: 2-5, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI
  • APP – Xavier Moronta: 2-4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI. walk

Deuces Wild: Three Pioneers score 2 goals each in 9-0 romp over South Caldwell

0

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — A little late spring weather didn’t dampen the performance of Watauga’s women’s soccer team on April 26. The Pioneers all but dominated South Caldwell in the 9-0 win that saw a pair of seniors, Katie Durham and Georgia Parker, as well as sophomore Savannah Duvall each find the back of the net twice for the home team in Jack Groce Stadium.

Rather than advance the ball with booming, long kicks, the Watauga game plan is to keep control of the ball on the ground with short, often one-touch passes to work the ball up field. Against the Spartans, they were near perfection in that aspect of their game and the ball rarely left the Pioneers’ attacking half of the field.

It really is a special team.

While Durham, Parker and Duvall had multi-goal performances, Watauga also had scores from Morgan Flynt, Charlotte Cuthbert, and Hannah Graham.

This is a team that prides itself in sharing the ball and setting up teammates with the best opportunity to score, so it is only natural that of the nine goals, eight of them resulted in credits for an assist. Parker was on the front end of a scoring play twice, while other assists were earned by Mattie Durham, Katie Durham, Lucy Willis, Savannah Rogers, Cuthbert, and Sam Bertrand.

Of his team’s dominating performance, head coach Chris Tarnowski said after the game that the Pioneers are coming together as a team at the perfect time.

With Watauga’s Chloe Weigl (13, in dark jersey) threatening to score, South Caldwell’s goalkeeper makes a last gasp save on April 26, in the Pioneers’ 9-0 win over the Spartans. South Caldwell’s Karrigan Bailey (13, in light jersey) is helping defend. Photographic image by David Rogers

“We are really hitting our best run of form here in the back half of the conference season,” said Tarnowski. “Our senior class is extraordinary and the members of it are doing an amazing job of leading the entire team, while keeping everyone focused on our goals. We want to be playing our best soccer as we finish the conference season and head into the playoffs — and our players should have a lot of confidence that we are doing just that. The team continues to support one another on and off the field and we are proud of how supportive they are of one another. It really is a special team.”

Tolley, Holderbach power App State to series opening win at Georgia State, 11-7

0

By David Rogers. ATLANTA, Ga. — A home run by centerfielder Banks Tolley and five RBI doubles off the bats of four other Mountaineers fueled App State to an exciting, 11-7 win over Georgia State in Game 1 of the weekend series on April 26.

Six members of the visiting Mountaineers tallied RBIs in the GSU Baseball Complex, including Tolley with his 19th home run of the season, a 2-RBI dinger to extend his school record-breaking campaign. Add in his subsequent RBI single and the senior transfer from Ole Miss has knocked in 55 runs during his debut season with App State.

Other doubles on the night were recorded by first baseman Drew Holderbach (2 of them), as well as shortstop Adam Quintero, rightfielder Hunter Wilder, and second baseman Joseph Zamora.

Relief pitcher Tyler Tuthill was credited with the win after giving up no runs on one hit while striking out three and walking none in his two innings of work. He inherited two runners in the 7th inning while relieving starting hurler Bradley Wilson, but the graduate student from Clayton, N.C. shut down the Panthers to end the rally.

With the win, the Mountaineers season record improves to 24-14-1 overall, 9-9-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Georgia State falls to 21-20 overall, 10-8 in the SBC.

Tolley sets new HR season record as Mountaineers pound Georgia State, 11-7

0

By Matt Present. ATLANTA, Ga. — Banks Tolley blasted his 18th home run of the season, establishing a new App State single-season home run record in the Mountaineers 11-7 victory over Georgia State, Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Tolley eclipsed the mark of 17 home runs in a season, set by Daniel Kassouf in 2012 and equaled by CJ Boyd last season.

The milestone home run came as part of a four-run fourth inning. Joseph Zamora began the rally with a two-out double to right, and Austin St. Laurent followed with an RBI single. Drew Holderbach, who extended his on-base streak to 39 consecutive games, doubled to left field to plate St. Laurent, setting the stage for Tolley’s no-doubt blast over the left field fence to put the Mountaineers (24-14-1, 9-9-1) in front, 7-1.

App State opened the scoring with a three-run third inning. St. Laurent reached on an error allowing Zamora to score and Holderbach capitalized with an RBI double down the line in left. Later in the inning, Braxton Church plated a run with an RBI groundout.

Bradley Wilson (win, 2-3) matched a career-high with six innings in his start for the Mountaineers. The right-hander struck out four and allowed just three runs on the night, posting a quality start, and earning his first victory since opening night.

Tyler Tuthill followed with an impressive two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in which he struck out three.

App State added on with a three-run sixth inning. Hunter Wilder led off the frame with a walk and two batters later St. Laurent was hit by a pitch. With two outs, the Mountaineers notched three-consecutive RBI singles, as Tolley, Boyd and Church all pushed runs across.

The Mountaineers finished the game going 8-for-16 (.500) with two outs. App State tallied 13 hits overall on the night, with Holderbach and Tolley each posting a three-hit effort.

App State will go for the series win on Saturday, with first pitch set for 3 p.m.

Senior Chris Wainscott recorded a new facility record in the men’s hammer throw with a personal best of 58.57m (192′ 2″). He set the previous record of 56.36m (184′ 11″) at last year’s inaugural App State Open and his 2024 personal best moves him to fifth in the App State all-time list. Freshman Nick Lane rounded out the top-five with a personal best of his own with a toss of 45.05m (147′ 10″). In the women’s hammer throw, junior Daiyanna Cooper clinched first with a toss of 52.11m (171′ 0″).

On the track, senior Jasmine Donohue stopped the clock at 4:54.55 for a personal best and second-place finish in the MJ Harrelson Women’s Mile. Fellow senior Elizabeth Fuller rounded out the top-five with a personal best of 5:03.52. In the men’s invitational mile, sophomore Ethan Lipham placed third with a personal best of 4:03.91. Burroughs, Shaw, Goff help lead Watauga to Women’s track and field win

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — Demonstrating just how important those second place finishes are to a track and field team’s final score, freshman Susanna Goff captured the No. 2 spot in the 1600-Meter Run among the 15 entrants, as well as the No. 2 spot in the 800-Meter Run (14 entries), contributing 12 total points to the Pioneers’ dominating team win in which they scored 162 points, well ahead of second place Avery County’s 67 points.

In the 1600 Meter Run, Goff’s fellow Watauga freshman Winter Shaw crossed the line at No. 1 (6:13.66). Molly Forbes, an Avery County freshman, finished No. 1 in the 800 meters, recording a time of 2:53.45, with Goff just five seconds behind.

Pioneer senior Olivia Burroughs was far and away the class of the fields in both the Discus and the Pole Vault. In the Discus, Burroughs threw almost 23 feet further than Alexander Central’s Asia Jackson in the second spot. In the Pole Vault, Burroughs finished a foot and a half better than teammate Emmerson Martin in the No. 2 spot, with teammate Sydney Helms picking up more team points at No. 3.

Burroughs completed her 22-point team contribution by placing second in the Shot Put, with freshman Lainey Gragg not far behind in the No. 3 position among the 17 entrants. Hibriten freshman Maggie Tay was No. 1, with a heave of 30-11.

With a total of eight athletes competing, Pioneer juniors Maggie Barnes and Ava Curtis, along with freshman Frances Davis, went 1-2-3 in the 300 Meter Hurdles event, besting competitors from Alexander Central and North Wilkes.
