My Life: Crossing paths with O.J.

0

By David Rogers. BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — I had mixed feelings today when learning that O.J. Simpson had died of prostate cancer. I met him in 1975, two years after he became the first player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in an NFL season and just a month before the ’75 season in which he nearly surpassed 2,000 yards again (1,817).

Our paths crossed, logically enough, on the campus of the University of Southern California, just outside Memorial Stadium where he had become one of the greatest college running backs of all time. I was walking to the tunnel that would take me onto the field at halftime of a Los Angeles Rams vs. Oakland Raiders game. I had been selected to play in what was billed as an all-star rugby exhibition for about 15 minutes during the intermission. It was quite a thrill to play in front of more than 68,000 people.

By this time, of course, Simpson was something like six years into his NFL career with Buffalo. He was cordial enough, offering a handshake. When he asked what I was doing for halftime and I told him about the rugby exhibition, he seemed impressed. “Now THAT is a man’s game,” he said.

A year later, any admiration I might have harbored for O J simpson was burned up in the exhaust of a slow moving, Ford Bronco.

I was on the front-end of a key play during the exhibition. I was playing right wing and when the ball was passed out to me there was little room to maneuver on what is a narrower football field. So I punched a high, up-and-under kick back toward the center of the field, 20-30 yards in front. On a full sprint, our flyhalf ran under the ball, gathered it in, and ran untouched to score the exhibition’s only try.

Because he had met me earlier, Simpson sought me out as we came off and congratulated me on making that play happen. He seemed to intuitively know that an improperly placed kick would not have allowed our flyhalf to be the central figure who scored. I was honored that he would even care about the play and its significance, much less my role.

After that encounter, however brief it might have been, I frequently wondered how O.J. would have done on the rugby pitch. I suspected he would do quite well once he understood the laws of the game, what he could and couldn’t do. Almost two decades later, in 1993, those thoughts and questions about O.J. and how he would have played resurfaced when I organized an inner city rugby program in Bakersfield, Calif., the Kern County Stampede.

A year later, any admiration I might have harbored for O J Simpson was burned up in the exhaust of a slow-moving Ford Bronco. With Simpson the passenger and his friend and former teammate Al Cowlings driving, a normally busy Los Angeles freeway was empty while police were engaged in a low speed pursuit of the man wanted for killing his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman, the night before.

Certainly, I did not want to believe that the same hand that had shaken mine two decades earlier had just taken the lives of two innocent people whose only crime was that they were friends. The Ford Bronco “pursuit” and his actions, for me, made the distraught Simpson look guilty.

Following the trial, filled with credible evidence against him — even with a potentially botched investigation at times — I didn’t see how he could be acquitted. Out of all the African American people throughout our country’s sordid racist history that were wrongfully lynched, executed or imprisoned for crimes they did not commit, this was the guy who was going to “get off,” scot-free?

How many times would I have to wash my right hand before it was clean enough?

Of course, he didn’t really get off scot-free. There was the lengthy civil trial and a jury that unanimously found Simpson guilty for the wrongful death of Ron Goldman and battery of both Goldman and Brown. He was ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages, $8.5 million in compensatory damages to the Goldman family, and $12.5 million in punitive damages to each family.

Not surprisingly, Simpson’s life took a downward spiral. His Heisman Trophy was auctioned off and the proceeds given to Goldman’s father. He moved to Florida so that his NFL pension would be protected (Florida does not permit pensions or residences to be seized as a way of collecting on debts).

There were brushes with the law in Florida and, perhaps most famously, the Las Vegas incident where he was accused of entering a hotel room at gunpoint and taking various sports memorabilia.

As a result of his conviction, Simpson spent almost nine years of a 33-year sentence in prison, released for good behavior in 2017.

Simpson’s death attributed to prostate cancer only underlines how much his life had spiraled downward. Caught early, there are many therapies to diminish or remove the threat. But catching it requires resources, including time and money, which Simpson may well have not had after being released from prison in 2017.

Yes, I had mixed feelings when I heard of O J Simpson’s passing on April 10. While I admired not just his gridiron talents but how, as a kid, he had used them as a way out of the Portrero projects in San Francisco. After early brushes with gangs and even the law during his high school years, he leveraged football for a ticket to USC and gridiron fame and fortune.

But in 1994, he threw it all away and I wondered how many times I would have to wash my right hand before it was clean enough.

Trey Thompson’s ‘Mic’d Up’ Track & Field Video for High Country Sports

0

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — Our guy on the street, Trey Thompson, was at Appalachian State’s Randy Marion Track & Field Facility on April 6, talking with a number of Watauga High School athletes competing in the first annual Appalachian State High School Invitational.

More than 40 schools had athletes competing in the various events on this state-of-the-art athletic venue. Reagan High School (Pfafftown) and Watauga seemed to dominate in the scoring for both the men’s and women’s divisions.

With this video, Thompson — who is a year removed as a Watauga graduate and is now attending Davidson College with a major in media arts — captures much of the fun and excitement of the track meet from the perspective of students and coaches.

Watauga Men’s Track runs away with 5-team meet

0

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — Led by Calvin Zwetsloot, Watauga swept the first five places in the Men’s 1600 Meter Run on April 10, helping propel the Pioneers to a convincing team win in the 5-team track and field meet.

The top three athletes from the same school earned team points, meaning that Zwetsloot, Grady Gates and Wesley Coatney racked up 24 team points for their evening’s performances.

Other notable performance by Watauga athletes:

  • Josiah Railey was a double winner in the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
  • Alex Gremmell was No. 1 in the 400 Meters, with Landon Smith and Curtis Sevensky picking up more valuable team points at No. 4 and No. 5.
  • Will Bradbury, Sam Nixon and Micah Duvall earned 1-2-4 finishes at 800 Meters.
  • Carson Gunnell-Beck was 1st in the Discus and 3rd in the Shot Put.
  • Clayo Kulczyk and Santino Wood went 1-2 in the Pole Vault.
  • Jonah Norris won the 3200 Meter Run.
  • Watauga dominated the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Watauga women dominate 5-team track meet vs. NWC rivals, others

0

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — With five schools competing on Aug. 10 at the Watauga High School track, at any point in time there was something going on at the venue. Down time in the running events? Just look to the High Jump or Discus. Are you missing the Long Jump and Pole Vault?

In team points, Watauga more than double the production of second place Ashe County and roughly six times the number of points recorded by 4A Northwestern Conference rival, third place South Caldwell. It was a team effort, with the Pioneers swamping the competition up and down the event schedule.

A few Watauga highlights:

  • In the grueling 3200 Meters event, Janie Beach-Verhay captured the No. 1 spot, almost two full minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
  • Senior Ellary Smith and freshman Winter Shaw went 1-2 in the 1600 meters event, with Anna Morris also picking up team points at No. 4.
  • Sadie Buchanan, Frances Davis and Ava Curtis swept the top three spots in the 300 Meter Hurdles.
  • Lainey Johnston, just a freshman, won the 800 Meters by almost four seconds over runner-up Lila Engler of Forsyth Home Educators.
  • It was a 1-2-3-4-6 finish for the Pioneers in the 200 Meters, with Sienna Johnson, Sarah Darner, Ava Doty, Mackenzy Cheek and Hadleigh Windish, respectively.
  • Watauga athletes swept the top six spots in the Long Jump: Kayla Graham, Olivia Burroughs, Eden Krenzin, Olivia Foskey, Sydney Helms, and Emmerson Martin.
  • Oliva Burroughs continued her near domination of the field events, with wins in Shot Put, Discus, and Pole Vault to go along with her No. 2 finish in the Long Jump.

Among the other schools, top performances included:

  • Freshman Lucy Roth if Forsyth Home Educators’ No. 1 finish in the 400 Meters, with South Caldwell’s Payton Anderson a little more than a second behind at No. 2.
  • Ashe County’s Emmi Cheek captured first place in the 100 Meters
  • Ashe County showed well in the 4×100 Relay, capturing No. 1 and No. 3 spots around second place Watauga.

SNAPSHOT: Lovell’s two homers (5 RBIs) help Ashe County to 12-3 softball win over Watauga

0

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — There was a sense of power in the stance and demeanor of Ashe County’s athletic Maleah Lovell when she stepped to the plate on April 8. She didn’t wait long in proving the perception, rocking a home run over the fence in left centerfield. And that dinger followed an earlier HR by the junior.

Ashe County dispatched the Pioneers convincingly, 12-3.

Huskies upend Pioneers, 7-1, with 6-run 6th inning

By David Rogers. BOONE, N.C. — Watauga hurler Everett Gryder allowed just one run over five innings vs. Ashe County on April 8, but the visiting Huskies chased him in the top of the 6th inning with five runs on three hits against the sophomore ace, en route to a 7-1 win at Pioneer Field.

Ashe County left fielder Gage Cheek went 1-3 on the day, the one hit being a bases-loaded, 3-RBI double, a major part of the 6-run offensive explosion by the Huskies in the sixth inning.

For the first five innings, the game was shaping up to be a 1-1 pitchers duel between Gryder on the mound for the Pioneers and Kye Pennington on the bump for Ashe County. Pennington allowed three hits and one run over five and one-third innings. He struck out seven Pioneers and walked four.

Gryder struck out the last two Husky batters in the top of the first, but not before the visitors took advantage of a walk that put Brodie Burgess on the base paths. He advanced on an errant pickoff attempt and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice grounder to shortstop Maddox Greene.

In the bottom half of the opening frame, the Pioneers responded when Greene rapped a 2-out ground ball through the middle for a single, then scored when Pioneer catcher Cooper Critcher doubled to the gap in right center.

Both pitchers cruised through the next four innings with only a little trouble, Pennington facing perhaps his biggest threat in issuing two consecutive walks before any outs in the bottom of the third.

After the Huskies exploded for six runs in the top of the sixth, prompting the Pioneers to insert Jameson Hodges on the hill for the remainder of the game, Pennington gave way to reliever Jordan Tibbs when the Pioneers mounted a minor scoring threat to start the inning.

Gryder was credited with allowing five runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks for his five-plus innings of work. Pennington picked up the win for the Huskies, allowing just one run on three hits, matching Gryder’s seven strikeouts and four walks.

Hook ’em for reel: Blowing Rock Trout Derby at 44 years and counting.

By David Rogers. BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — At 44 years, the Blowing Rock Trout Derby is the second longest, continuous running event in town behind only the six decades of Art in the Park — and if the trout weren’t exactly jumping on the fishing tackle April 6, there was plenty of angler action and loads of family fun.

In moving the event headquarters to a tent setup on the north end of Broyhill Lake, event director Kim Rogers and her merry band of volunteers Mike Calhoun, Tom Shelley, Maddie Parker, Anabel Parker and representatives of co-sponsor The Speckled Trout Outfitters were kept busy throughout the day by the “small fry” and their families lining the banks of the historic lake to the west of the American Legion Building. They loaded up on Trout Derby T-shirts and free, richly supplied tackle boxes, all aimed at promoting fishing among young people — just like the original sponsors of Trout Derby more than four decades ago. They included Rogers’ father, Elmer Jenkins (Jenkins Realtors), Earl Trexler (Village Hardware), James Marsh (Northwestern Bank), and Wayne Underwood (Mystery Hill).

While the morning started out blustery with sub-freezing temperatures and estimated 30 miles per hour winds, it hardly dampened the spirits of young and old alike happy to be celebrating the opening day of trout fishing season.

Young Asher Boyd turned the proverbial “hat trick” as a triple winner on the day. He registered the First Fish at 7:46 a.m., captured first place in the “Catch and Release” small fry division, and won the art contest. For the latter, his art will be showcased on next year’s event T-Shirt and promotional posters.

Mason Rush and Charlotte Hill each won $25 for catching one of the tagged fish. In the 16 and older “Traditional” (harvest) division, James Rooney captured first place with a 21.5″ trophy fish. Meredith Cavalier was close behind with a 20.5 incher. And Gene Hodges rounded out the top 3 with a 19.5-inch fish that would fit nicely on any dinner plate.

In the “Catch and Release” 16 and older division, Tripp Nazziola reeled in 437 inches of bait catchers, followed by No. 2 Phillip Jamison’s 378 inches and No. 3 Ben Milam’s 225.5 inches.

In the Traditional division, Price Lake proved the source of two of the three largest species categories. For Brook trout, Grayzlyn Douglas took top honors with a 13.25-inch specimen from Price Lake. For Brown trout, Meredith Cavalier won the prize at 20.5 inches (Watauga River). And for Rainbow, James Rooney hauled in a 21.5 incher out of Price Lake.

Following Boyd’s first place effort in the “Catch and Release” Small Fry division were second place Ethan Boyd and third place Joey Sexton.

In the Traditional Small Fry division, Palmer Jordanhaby was No. 1 at 16.75 inches, Lucy Vandenhazen was No. 2 at 15.5 inches, and Grayzlyn Douglas picked up some more hardware at No. 3 (13.25-inches).
