By David Rogers. June 11, 2016. BOONE, NC — Some danced across the Holmes Center stage and others giggled at hearing an enthusiastic “Attagirl!” from an enthusiastic and proud family member, but the vast majority of Watauga High School’s Class of 2016 had big smiles as they shook hands or offered a warm hug to Dr. Scott Elliott (Superintendent of Schools), Ron Henries (School Board Chairman), Marshall Gasperson (Principal) or Kelly Walker (Assistant Principal).

Three hundred and five 2016 graduates crossed the stage this year, with thousands more in the arena’s grandstands watching their sons, daughters, grandchildren or family friends close a final chapter in their early education.
There was pomp and circumstance aplenty in this graduation ceremony of Pioneers, but some of the most poignant moments came in the thoughtful voices of student speakers Callie Idol (Senior Class President), Darcy Carson (Student Body President), Anna Phillips (Salutatorian) and Lucy Edy (Valedictorian). If nothing else, they demonstrated that their classroom instruction at Watauga was nurtured in an inquisitive, even thought-provoking learning environment.
Here’s a slideshow of various captured images from the event.
