Speed considered factor in Catawba single-car death

By Jeffrey S. Swagger, Master Trooper, NC State Highway Patrol. September 17, 2019. NEWTON, NC – On Tuesday, 17 September the NC State Highway Patrol (SHP) responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Catawba County.

A 2005 Hyundai Elantra was traveling north on Scronce Road, ran off the road to the right, struck a ditch, became airborne, collided with several trees, and overturned.  The vehicle came to rest upside down in a field beside a small creek.  A passerby came upon the unoccupied vehicle and reported it.

The SHP was notified at 7:10 a.m. and immediately responded.  The investigating trooper climbed down a steep embankment of heavy brush and located a deceased male at the edge of the creek.

The victim was determined to be the driver, Brandon Eugene Scronce, 30, of Hickory.  The collision is believed to have occurred sometime overnight.  The driver was not restrained by a seatbelt and excessive speed appears to be a contributing circumstance.
