NO GETAWAY: Speeding Lenoir driver dies in crash while fleeing police

SPECIAL REPORT. By Master Trooper Jeffrey S. Swagger. May 12, 2020. NEWTON, NC – On Tuesday, May 12, at approximately 12:00 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Caldwell County on Hartland Road near Celia Creek Road.

The Lenoir Police Department had attempted to stop a 2004 Honda Accord for a speeding violation.  The driver of the vehicle began attempting to elude authorities, initiating a vehicle pursuit.  Once outside the city limits, the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office took over the pursuit.  During the course of the pursuit, the Honda drove left of center in a curve and collided with a 2005 Chevrolet passenger car which was traveling the opposite direction.

The driver of the Honda, Falando McKinley Francis, 42, of Lenoir, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  He was restrained by a seatbelt.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Jacob Walker, 28, of Lenoir, was transported by EMS to Caldwell Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  Two adult passengers and two children, ages 2 and 5, were also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  The adults were restrained by seatbelts and the children were properly restrained in child restraint seats.
