By David Rogers. January 30, 2016. BLOWING ROCK, NC — Lew Hendricks may not have won the top prize money for the Individual category of Saturday’s Winterfest Chili Cookoff at Blowing Rock School, but he may have picked up a number of votes in his political campaign against incumbent Jonathan Jordan in the race for the District 93 House of Representatives seat.
Hendricks won the “People’s Choice Award” for his chili entry, including a complimentary visit to the Chetola Mountain Resort spa, but the real winner was the Blowing Rock School PTO.
For the first time in the history of the Winterfest Chili Cookoff, the event judging panel’s scoring of the Individual category of chili entries ended in three-way tie. After a second judging panel was recruited and the three chili concoctions sampled, there was a two-way tie. Yet another judging session was required before Terry Hart, with “Hart’s Mountain Chili” was declared the winner of the $500 cash prize for the 1st place winner in the Individual category.
In accepting the cash award of five crisp $100 bills, Mr. Hart and his wife Carol were all smiles as they gave the money back to the PTO. Later, Blowing Rock News interviewed 4th grade teacher and member of the PTO, Martha Trimble, who said in a conversation with the winner, Mr. Hart simply said, “My wife and I prayed about it and we decided that if we should win, then we will donate it back. We felt that was the right thing to do.”
2nd place in the Individual category went to “Charles’ Addictive Chili” ($250 cash prize) and 3rd place was awarded to Blowing Rock’s Rita White ($100 cash award).
In the Restaurant category, the Best Cellar’s Josh Emerline picked up the travelling trophy from the 2015 winner, Jay Nolan of Meadowbrook Inn.
Best Table Decoration went to the “Belle Chili” entry, from Lenoir, and received a gift certificate to Ugga Mugga Bakery in Blowing Rock.
