I-77 in Iredell County closed for 2 hours with traffic fatality

NEWTON, NC On Wednesday, 6 November 2019 at approximately 8:50 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to a fatal collision in Iredell County on I-77 North near the 52 mile-marker.  A 2005 Toyota Scion passenger car was traveling northbound in the left lane and, according to witnesses, was driving erratically.  The Toyota lost control, collided with the median guardrail, then traveled into the right lane in front of and colliding with a 1997 International tractor-trailer logging truck.  Both vehicles traveled off the road to the right where the tractor-trailer overturned and lost part of the load.

The driver of the Toyota, Henry Alexander Gonzalez Rodriguez, 27, of Wilkesboro, died at the scene.  The driver of the logging truck, James Edward Bodford, 62, of Mocksville was not injured.  The truck was owned by Shaver Wood Products in Cleveland, NC.

Both drivers were restrained by seatbelts and there are no initial indications of impairment.  No charges are expected.  Both lanes of I-77 North were closed for approximately two hours until one lane could be re-opened as cleanup continued for several hours.
