Hickory woman held on Felony Death by Vehicle in Burke County hit and run

By Master Trooper Jeffrey S. Swagger, NC Department of Public Safety. June 2, 2020. NEWTON — On Monday, June 1, at approximately 11:15 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and is investigating a fatal hit and run collision in Burke County on US 70A near Hildebran.

A 1997 Lexus was traveling on US 70A in the area of Happy Day Grocery and collided with a bicyclist.  The Lexus fled the scene.  The bicyclist, identified as Robert Caine Fox, 31, of Hickory, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Troopers located the suspect vehicle and driver of the Lexus just after midnight.  The driver has been identified as Maria Ann Arteaga, 36, of Hickory.  Arteaga was arrested and charged with Felony Death by Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, and Driving While License Revoked.  She is being held under the $80,000 bond at the Burke County Detention Center.

  1. Hope shes given equal time to that of a white man running over a black woman and fleeing the scene. Let’s see our Justice system work for EVERYONE!! JUSTICE IS BLIND? No color or sex should ever be considered!!
