GRUDGE MATCH: Blowing Rock girls get even at Cove Creek, 34-20

By David Rogers. January 9, 2020. VILAS, NC — After falling behind to Cove Creek 6-2 at the end of the opening quarter of play Thursday night, Blowing Rock’s girls basketball team took charge and evened the game at 12-12 at halftime, then continued on to a convincing, 34-20 middle school basketball win.

For the first half, Blowing Rock’s Kate Sears mostly stayed out of the fray (even though scoring seven points before intermission), content to distribute the ball to her teammates. All that changed after the halftime break, as the athletic Rockets playmaker exploded for 11 of her 14 second-half points in the third quarter. Sears finished with a game-high 21 points. Teammate Katie Durham added 10 and ET Tilley came off the bench to contribute three points from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

With just under two minutes remaining in the game, the Rockets mostly played keep away. Except for a single 3-pointer in the 4th quarter by Durham, head coach Martha Trimble’s Blowing Rock five were content to milk the clock and not pile on the Raiders, who trailed 25-16 at the end of the third period. Six of the Rockets’ nine points in the final stanza were from the foul line.

“Hey, you’re in my way!” Blowing Rock’s Kate Sears maneuvers around Cove Creek’s Bailey Main, toward the basket.

With the win, the Rockets exacted a measure of revenge against the Raiders, who defeated Blowing Rock, 30-20, on November 21st when Sears suffered an early arm/hand injury. Cove Creek suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to 11-1 in Watauga middle school play. Blowing Rock improves to 10-2.

Both teams head into the final week of regular season play with an eye toward a potential, best-of-three rematch in the league tournament (probably in the final). To garner the #1 tourney seed, Cove Creek needs to get by Valle Crucis (4-8) on Monday, Jan. 13, and Green Valley (0-12) on Thursday, Jan. 16. To secure the #2 seed, Blowing Rock hosts Green Valley on Monday and a strong Parkway contingent (8-4) on Thursday.
