GOING LONG: Blowing Rock Men’s Connection Hosts Albert Long For 8th Annual Summer Breakfast

By David Rogers. July 23, 2016. BLOWING ROCK, NC — Long after earning seven “letters” in four varsity sports at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Albert Long is still “…playing on the team coached by Him.”

Long will visit Blowing Rock on Tuesday as the keynote speaker for the Blowing Rock Men’s Connection bible study’s 8th Annual Summer Breakfast at Chetola Mountain Resort’s Evergreen Room, in Blowing Rock, 8:30 am. A continental breakfast will be served. Admission is free.

“This is the yearly event where we have a special speaker and invite wives, girlfriends — well, the whole community is invited,” Men’s Connection organizer Tucker Yates explained to Blowing Rock News in a phone interview. “We’ve had some terrific speakers in the past, but Albert Long will be right up there with the best of them. He is a delightful and riveting speaker on behalf of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Although was awarded North Carolina’s coveted Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2015, Long is probably best known for having earned seven varsity letters in four sports while attending Chapel Hill. Earning his degree in 1955, he earned letters in baseball (3), football (2), basketball (1) and track (1), and his senior year won the Patterson Medal as the school’s top student athlete.

After graduating from college, Long spent a number of years in the insurance business and in 1973 formed Albert Long Happenings, Inc., a non-profit Christian organization.  Across all of North Carolina and the USA, he has made more than 2,000 speaking appearances to high schools, middle schools, churches, athletic banquets and other civic groups. He has been very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and in 2007 was named to that organization’s Hall of Champions.

With co-author Chad Bonham, Long wrote, “It Was Just A Coincidence – Stories of God’s Providence,” recounting many experiences during Long’s lifetime. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the Men’s Connection breakfast.

He spent three years as a senior financial writer for a global financial PR firm with offices in Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, Beijing, Tel Aviv, and Frankfort (Germany).
