By Brad Batchelor. August 1, 2015. BOONE, NC — An estimated 60+ high school football hopefuls turned out for the first official day of practice Saturday morning, training for the Watauga High School varsity and junior varsity squads.
Pioneer head coach Ryan Habich put his charges through the paces, with fitness and agility drills aplenty and some run-throughs on plays and blocking schemes. It was a no-contact session with the players clad in shorts and helmets, and no pads.
Enthusiasm was high among players and coaches as the 2015 grid campaign gets underway. Habich has established what he terms, “the Big Five” that comprise the “Watauga Way”:
