September 28, 2014, BLOWING ROCK, NC — St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock will be the focus of “Art Rocks: Sacred Music in the Village ” at 3:00 pm today, at St. Mary’s on Main Street.
Music Director Jim Bumgardner will welcome town visitors at 3:00 pm and talk about the new organ (and maybe even play it!). Then St. Mary’s “Solemn Evensong” service will begin at 3:30 pm.
The organ was built by Lively-Fulcher Organbuilders of Rocky Mount, VA, and is the final part of St. Mary’s complete restoration and renovation that has taken place over the past year. The organ was built especially to complement the style of worship and music program at St. Mary’s.
The choral “evensong” service will be presented by the choir of St. Mary’s. Selections to be performed include the Walmsley Magnificat and Nunc dimittis, and the Clucas Preces and Responses. The anthem will be factum est silencium, which involves an exciting battle between the Archangel Michael and a dragon, by Phillips.
Evensong is presented monthly at St. Mary’s from April through October. It is part of the monastic daily cycle of prayer offered around the world and has changed little since the 16th century.
