Blowing Rock boys cruise to 44-18 win over Bethel

Go long! Bennett Brown (24) passes down court to Morgan Henry in transition.

By David Rogers. November 18, 2019. BLOWING ROCK, NC — A first quarter scoring outburst led by guards Sam Nixon, Wyatt Kohout, and Brodie Sukow propelled Blowing Rock to an early, 16-6 lead over visiting Bethel, Monday night at the Blowing Rock gymnasium. It was a lead the Rockets never relinquished en route to a routine, 44-18 Watauga middle school boys basketball league win.

Kohout, Sukow, and Nixon scored four points apiece in the opening stanza, with big man Morgan Henry and Mika Duvall adding another two each. The scattering of points among several players is representative of the entire game as 12 Blowing Rock players took their turns in putting the ball through the hoop and lighting up the scoreboard.

While the Bethel boys were scrappy throughout and never quit, they were clearly outmatched by the depth of the Rockets’ roster. The outcome was never in doubt, even with Blowing Rock’s second and third teamers on the floor. Sukow, one of the first players off the bench for the Rockets, led the team with six points.

Bethel’s scoring was concentrated in the hands of Noah Dishman’s game-high nine points and Dalton Reese’s seven. Josh Colburn added two to complete the visitors’ scoring line.

With the win, Blowing Rock is now tied with Parkway atop the Watauga middle school standings, both schools with undefeated, 4-0 records. There are two more league games, vs. Cove Creek (Nov. 21) and at Green Valley (Nov. 25) before the apparent “titans” of the 2019 season meet for the first time at Parkway, Dec. 5th. On Dec. 9th, Blowing Rock travels to Valle Crucis to complete the first round of the home-at home Watauga middle school schedule.

Morgan Henry (50) skies above the crowd for two.
