WALK IN THE PARK: Rockets defeat Parkway girls, 41-9

By David Rogers. January 16, 2020. BLOWING ROCK, NC — Perhaps Blowing Rock’s last game of the Watauga County girls middle school league’s regular season was time to make a statement. The Lady Rockets put the proverbial pedal to the metal from the get-go and never lifted their feet off the gas Thursday night, defeating Parkway 41-9, in front of a standing-room only crowd in the Blowing Rock School gymnasium.

Head coach Martha Trimble’s full court press defense paid dividends right at the start. Parkway’s Charlotte Torgerson won the opening tipoff, but on the visitors’ first two attempts to bring the ball down court on offense, the Rockets’ Katie Durham and Kate Sears poached the ball and turned the steals into quick layups. By the end of just the 1st quarter, Blowing Rock led, 21-2.

And it only got more dominating from there. Sears and Durham both recorded double digits in points scored in the first half, with 14 and 10, respectively. Sears was able to hit from both outside — including two 3-pointers — and inside. Her inside play featured sweeping reverse layups as she powered through the Parkway defense. Durham forced the ball to the hoop through traffic, twice getting fouled in the process of making her layups.

For the game, Katy Barker added three and Mattie Durham came off the bench to contribute two points.

Kate Sears goes up and in for two of her game-high 18 points.

The Blowing Rock girls enter the league tournament next week as the #2 seed, behind top-seeded Cove Creek, with whom they split during the regular season. The Rockets will likely face the #7 seed, Bethel (2-12 in regulars season play).
