Blowing Rock boys turn Green Valley blue, 60-30

By David Rogers. January 13, 2020. BLOWING ROCK, NC — For the first six minutes of Monday night’s boys middle school basketball tilt between Blowng Rock and Green Valley, it was a nailbiter. But with a pesky defense holding GV to just three points in the second period, the Rockets got their groove on with a 42-15 run through the final three quarters to win in convincing fashion, 60-30.

Starting guard Bennett Brown provided most of the firepower in the first half, pouring in 17 of his game-high 19 points before intermission.

Starting point guard Grant Troyer provided five first quarter points (game total: 7), including a nifty swoop underneath a Green Valley defender for an up-and-in layup for the play of the night.

With a big halftime lead (33-18), head coach Todd Hartley once again was able to effectively distribute court time among his frontline starters and players coming off the bench. Ben Watson found the bottom of the net for eight points, Andrew Hill for four, Sam Nixon (7), and Brodie Sukow (5).

Starting forward Wyatt Kohout did as much damage spreading the ball around to teammates as he did scoring, but still managed to record eight points, all but two in the first half. Morgan Henry and Ayden Knight were strong rebounding contributors.

The win sets up a big showdown for Blowing Rock (13-0 in Watauga middle school league play) with Parkway on Thursday. The hoopsters from Boone’s east side defeated Hardin Park, Monday night, 36-26.  At 12-1, Parkway’s only loss came at the hands of Blowing Rock on December 5th, a 45-13 thumping on Parkway’s home court. As the regular season finale, it could well be a preview of the conference tournament final that is slated to begin next week.
