Rotary Charity Auction nets $26k for non-profit causes

By David Rogers. August 18, 2019. BLOWING ROCK, NC — More, more, more. Nearly one hundred registered bidders took their turns competing for more than a handful of valuable prizes Saturday night at Blowing Rock’s American Legion Building. The occasion? Blowing Rock’s 6th annual Rotary Charity Auction.

Event chair John Calvin reported to Blowing Rock News that the club netted (after expenses) approximately $26,000.  The premier auction prize this year was an abstract painting of a tree by acclaimed artist, Stephen Brooks. The large (30″ x 48″) Twilight Oak oil on canvas fetched $2,700.

Whether for art, golf foursomes at prestigious country clubs, or any number of other items, at times the bidding was sufficiently competitive to be high entertainment, and the thunderous applause that accompanied the three auctioneers’ declaration of “SOLD” was prove positive that the audience appreciated every moment.

The food and beverages were supplied by the Inn at Ragged Gardens and Best Cellar Restaurant.

With the $26,000 net, The Rotary Club of Blowing Rock has now raised roughly $182,000 for various charitable causes, most of them local non-profit agencies. Along with Rotary’s fund-raising efforts in support of the Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show, each year the local club raises in the neighborhood of $50,000, 100% of which goes to not-for-profit initiatives since on the local level Rotary is made up entirely of volunteers.

Agencies are current or past recipients of Blowing Rock Rotary contributions and grants include, but are not limited to:
