No other team was in sight as Watauga crossed the finish line in the 4×400 relay.

By David Rogers. May 2, 2018. BOONE, NC – Led by “sweeps” in the middle distance and distance races, as well as strong individual performances in the field events, Watauga High School women’s track team ran away with the 2018 Northwester Conference team title on Wednesday at Jack Groce Stadium.

Sophia Ritter dominated the 1600 meters and 3200 meter races, winning in 5:42.54 and 12:20.05, respectively. In both races she headlined a 1-2 Watauga sweep, with Riley Fowler taking the second spot in the 1600 in 5:58.03, just ahead of Alexander Central’s Camella Church (5:58.55) and Watauga’s Angela Ramsdell (5:58.71).

In the 3200, Ritter emerged from the first lap pack with the lead on the backstretch, then stretched her advantage for the remainder of the race. She finished with a time of 12:20.05, well ahead of second place teammate Ramsdell’s 3:08.12. Ramsdell came across the finish line more than a half-minute ahead of third place finisher Church of Alexander Central.

In the 800 meter run, Watauga recorded a 1-2-3 sweep, with Caroline Edwards (2:32.58), Emma Tzotschew (2:32.91) and Emma Beach (2:38.42), all well ahead of fourth place finisher Sarah Hirsch (2:45.69), representing Hickory.

Alexander Central’s Chesney Price was impressive in winning the pole vault.

Watauga picked up a lot of team points in both hurdles events, with Emma Brown capturing the title in both 100 meter hurdles (16.05) and its 300 meter counterpart (49.36).

Alyssa Lopez picked up third place honors in the 100 hurdles (17.60), just behind St. Stephens’ Lauren Gantt (17.53).

In the 300 hurdles, Watauga registered another 1-2-3 sweep with Lopez’s 51.76 and Brooke Byrd’s 52.60 good enough for second and third, respectively.

Not surprisingly given the Pioneers’ middle distance performances, Watauga’s 4×400 relay team dominated en route to a first place finish, the 4:30.13 nearly seven seconds ahead of 2nd place Alexander Central and 12 seconds in front of third place St. Stephens.

Watauga also bested the field in the 4×800 relay, the team’s 11:07.72 well ahead of Alexander Central’s 11:28.95 and South Caldwell’s 11:39.82.

Although Alexander Central’s Chesney Price (9-00.00) vaulted a whole foot higher than her competition, Watauga’s Grace Watson (8-00.00), Ella Nelson (8-00.00) and Lauren Shaw (7-06.00) earned valuable team points in going 2-3-4 in the pole vault.
