By David Rogers. January 12, 2018. MORGANTON, NC — Maddisen Robinson and Madie Darner combined for 25 points in the second half alone, breaking open a tight high school women’s basketball game to power Watauga past Freedom Friday night, 52-44.

It was deja vu all over again for the Lady Pioneers, all in the same week. After beating Hickory on Tuesday for the first time since 1991, the Watauga women used an encore performance to defeat longtime nemesis Freedom.  Even more remarkable about these historic achievements: both wins were on the road.

Darner recorded a team-high 16 points, nine of them in the form of three consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. For the game, Darner had four successful attempts from behind the three-point arc.

Robinson also had a big final period, with six points, and 15 points for the full 32 minutes of play.  The senior point guard took dead aim from the charity stripe, hitting a perfect 8-of-8 during the game. including 6-of-6 in the decisive final stanza.

The sophomore duo of Brooke Byrd and Rebekah Farthing added 10 points and six, respectively.

The Pioneer women stay on the road next Tuesday when they travel to Lenoir to face West Caldwell. The Warriors are 4-11 overall, 0-6 in Northwestern Conference play.

The Pioneers are now 11-2 overall, 5-0 in conference play.  They have a make-up rivalry game at Ashe County on Wednesday, (January 17), before returning home to face St. Stephens at Lentz Eggers Gym on Thursday (January 18), then going back on the road to South Caldwell on Friday (January 19).
