By David Rogers. April 26, 2017. CALDWELL COUNTY, NC — Not many details have been released as yet, but a vehicle (tractor-trailer) fire down the mountain near Kirby Mountain Rd. has traffic greatly slowed on U.S. 321.

Blowing Rock News reader Jimmy Smith sent these images as he passed by early this morning, describing the situation then as, “Police so far have one alternating lane open.”

Although the official cause of the fire has not been determined, based on observation of where the fire appears to have occurred at the front of the trailer, one observer suspects over-heating brakes may have been the culprit, “But that is pure speculation,” he said. “We won’t know until they tell us.”

Follow-up contact by Blowing Rock News with a representative of Caldwell County Communications confirmed that the tractor and trailer had caught fire, but the cause had not yet been determined. He stated that as of 8:55 am, one lane was open in each direction. “It’s slow, but it’s moving,” he said.

Additional details will be provided as we receive them.
