By David Rogers. January 27, 2018. BLOWING ROCK, NC — They don’t sometimes call it Foggy Rock for nuttin’. In spite of the weather putting a damper on things, Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce told Blowing Rock News early last week that most of the events and activities for this weekend’s Winterfest were sold out.
First Vice Chairman of the Chamber and owner of Blowing Rock Market, David Barker, noted to Blowing Rock News as things were winding down early Saturday evening that despite the weather, attendance had been very good. “Yes, the rain and fog had an impact on some things,” he admitted, “but the feeling all around is that had it not been for the weather, this would be one of the biggest, if not the biggest Winterfest weekends in its now two decades long history.
Hot chocolate and coffee were popular, of course, but there are plenty of things to bring smiles to lots and lots of folks. Even a “cranky” child being wheeled down a Main Street sidewalk brought a chuckle or two for passers by.
We got them a little past their prime, but below is a sampling of ice sculptures purchased by various businesses around town.
Barker marveled in describing the process, “Each one came in pieces, maybe four or five. For our Yosef profile, I was looking forward to seeing how they do the corn cob pipe, but this was all computer generated, pre-designed on on a CAD program and then etched out like with a 3-D printer. They spray water on the surface of the parts that need to go together, and they immediately bond to form one piece. It is really fascinating!”
