Rough Ridge — Up and Over

Rough Ridge – Up and Over

If ever there was an appropriate name for a trail, this is it: Rough Ridge. It’s not so much that there is a 300 foot elevation change over just a half mile’s distance, but what you have to go over to reach the top.  They might just as soon have called it “Rugged Walk Rough Ridge.”  And yet, it is as satisfying of a hike as any in the High Country.  About a third of the way up there are specially built observation decks from which you can enjoy (on a clear day) sweeping, panoramic views of the Piedmont below, Grandfather Mountain behind you, and turn 90 degrees south and you can see the spine of mountains leading toward Asheville, including Mt. Mitchell.
