By David Rogers. July 7, 2017. BLOWING ROCK, NC — By the close of the business day on Friday, the first day for anyone to file as a candidate for a local public office, only two names from Blowing Rock had been recorded. Both were for the same office, Mayor of Blowing Rock.
Charlie Sellers, owner of The Blowing Rock attraction, unsuccessfully challenged longtime incumbent J.B. Lawrence two years ago, but he is undeterred. “It is long past time for change,” Sellers told Blowing Rock News recently.
Lawrence is the former local bank manager, now turned real estate broker. He is running for his 11th consecutive term as Mayor of Blowing Rock.
As of Friday’s closing of the Watauga County Board of Elections office, no one had filed to run for the three vacancies on the Blowing Rock Board of Commissioners, the seats currently held by Sue Sweeting, Ray Pickett and Doug Matheson.
In Boone, incumbent Rennie Brantz is so far the only mayoral candidate, but there are four candidates for Boone Town Council, including Connie Ulmer, Jeannine Underdown Collins, Charlotte Mizelle, and Jill Reeves. Mizelle and Collins are both running for re-election.
The filing period ends at 12:00 noon, July 21, 2017. Prospective candidates have until then to indicate their desire to run for public office.
