July 27, 2017. DURHAM, NC – Mr. Fred Andrew Preddy, Jr, (81) formerly of Blowing Rock, NC, died at Hillcrest Convalescent Center on Sunday, July 23, 2017. The Preddy family would like to thank the staff at Hillcrest for their care of Mr. Preddy.
Mr. Preddy was born August 24, 1935 in Barnesville, Georgia to the late Fred Andrew, Sr. and Martha Lifsey Preddy. He was raised in Mt. Airy, NC, graduating from Mt. Airy High School where he played football and basketball all four years. He earned his degree in Industrial Management from Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. Mr. Preddy, a true patriot, proudly served his country with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was employed in the furniture industry, serving as founding President of Venture Furniture Company (a division of the Lane Company) in Conover, NC; President of Sealy Connecticut Furniture Company in New Haven, CT; Vice-President of La-Z-Boy Inc. (Corporate) in Monroe, MI; and retiring as President of Hammary Furniture (a division of La-Z-Boy Inc.) in Lenoir, NC. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the American Furniture Manufacturers Association. Upon retirement, he was a visiting instructor at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.
Mr. Preddy, and his late wife, Nancy, were actively involved at both Middle Fork Baptist Church in Blowing Rock, NC and with The Crossnore School and Children’s Home in Crossnore, NC. He also self-published his own book, titled “You Gotta Make It Happen”, whose proceeds benefitted The Crossnore School.
Mr. Preddy was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Johnson Inmon Preddy, in 2014. He is survived by his children, Robin Preddy Dawson (Mark) of Durham, NC; Elizabeth Preddy Hilliard of Charlotte, NC; Rebecca Inmon Ford (Jim) of Marietta, GA; Michael Inmon (Magnolia) of Ashburn, VA; John Inmon (Ginger) of Highlands Ranch, CO; his grandchildren, Julia-Scott and Elissa Dawson; Jay, Scott, and Parker Hilliard; Stephanie and Allen Ford; Alvaro and Christian Inmon; Aubrey and Olivia Inmon; his siblings, Elizabeth Preddy of Chapel Hill, NC; Mike Preddy (Kathy) of Harlingen, TX; and Jean Preddy Hakel of Murphy, NC; and his niece Tiffany Preddy Albury (Joseph) of Harlingen, TX.
Mr. Preddy’s graveside service will be held on August 11, 2017 at 4:00 PM at Woodlawn Cemetery (6578 U.S. Hwy. 321 South, Blowing Rock, NC 28605). It will be officiated by Peter Vandenberg, his pastor at Middle Fork Baptist Church, and Mark Dawson, his son-in-law.
