Special Report to Blowing Rock News from Blowing Rock Police Department. By Capt. Tony Jones. October 8, 2015. BLOWING ROCK, NC — Blowing Rock residents have recently reported that individuals are knocking on doors, selling magazine subscriptions claiming they are raising money for worthy causes.
Before anyone buys a magazine from someone selling door-to-door, we encourage potential buyers to consider:
Only buy magazines being sold door-to-door from someone you know and trust.
If you decide to buy anyway, get a receipt and contact information for refunds.
Ask questions before you pay any money. If the seller claims that money will go to a school, hospital, or other worthy group, ask the seller to show you a letter of endorsement from that organization. Better yet, contact that organization itself.
If you decide to buy anyway, get a receipt that includes refund and contact information, the total cost of each subscription, and the date you’ll receive the magazines.
Some of the prices for the magazine subscriptions have been reported to be much higher than the price of a normal subscription.
If you feel uncomfortable with the organization but still want to give to a charitable organization there are numerous organizations here in the high country or nationally recognized organizations that you may choose to give to.
These factors mentioned here are in is no way intended to discourage you from purchasing a subscription from any organization engaged in this type of solicitation. These are only to serve as a reminder that not all organizations are what they represent themselves to be.
If you suspect a scam is underway you may report it to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or filing a complaint online at www.ncdoj.gov
