By David Rogers. July 19, 2017. BLOWING ROCK, NC — Almost half a century — that’s how long the Blowing Rock Fashion Show has been serving as a major fundraiser for healthcare in the High Country, but also one of the signature events of the summer.
Originally hosted at Mayview Manor, the fashion show and luncheon eventually migrated to Blowing Rock Country Club. This year’s 40th anniversary event features a champagne reception, fashions from local boutiques, a silent auction, a raffle and, of course, a luncheon.
Mandy Poplin serves as the Chairperson of the 2017 edition of the iconic event, which is slated for Friday, July 21, 2017, at Blowing Rock Country Club.
“It’s such a pleasure to be a part of the 40 years of tradition,” Poplin, the manager of the local Doncaster Outlet said this week as she oversaw preparations. “This fashion show has been a hallmark of our summers! Blowing Rock is a desirable destination and we get to play tourist every day with some of the best shopping in the entire state of North Carolina. In Blowing Rock, one can find everything from designer brands to top of the line shoes and accessories, to estate jewelry and one-of-a-kind items from cottage industries. We’re looking forward to showing of samples of what we have to offer.”
A highlight of the event is the naming of the annual Blowing Rock Woman of the Year which, through the years has recognized dozens of deserving women. Each year the winner is voted on and selected by participating previous winners of the award. The 2016 “Blowing Rock Woman of the Year” was Harriet Davant, wife of the late Dr. Charles Davant, Jr., who is regarded as the “father” of Blowing Rock’s healthcare industry.
The fashion show in Blowing Rock is a charity event originally benefiting Blowing Rock Hospital, then the Chestnut Ridge Post-Acute Care Facility, and this year is more generally supporting “healthcare in the High Country.”
